WHY DIVERSITY? WHY NOW?

What do you think is the best way to express the necessity of fostering diverse environments for women in music production when many can’t see, or don’t believe, that there is a need?

Abhita Austin: Right now, my natural inclination is that I have nothing to say to them. Like, if you don’t get it, you’re living in a different world than the rest of us. I think the way to express this is to actually do the work. I feel like, once again, creating channels that women can come through, and I think we all can do that. It can be, like, for me, I am working with this collective on this one producer’s showcase that promotes women, and so I am not only just, like, helping women in that case, but we do little mini docs on them, and that’s pushed through our social media channels. So, you’re not just seeing a woman’s name on the bill, or whoever the producer is—we do this for the men too—but you’re learning about the women. To me, the visual of seeing a woman hitting an electrical piece of equipment, touching faders, that’s major! Even when I see it and I am shooting it and I live it, but I never see myself back. Even seeing it, I’m like, “Wow.” It’s like, I don’t see this often. I’m seeing it more often, but just the visual of it is very important. I think that we just have to create channels for women to come through, as women, because we can’t look for men to do it, because they don’t understand. They don’t stand on the right level needed to want to do this, and I don’t expect them to. So what do I say to people who don’t get it? I mean, they have some soul searching to do, honestly. I’ve even come across women who feel like they’re not affected by sexism, and I come across women who are all about, “Why can’t we unite with the men?” And that’s fine, but I scratch my head. It’s almost like you’re ignoring something that’s there. We have to call it for what it is in order for it to be better.
